Memphis, Tenn. (Sept. 29, 2012) – Competing against a field of both NCAA Division I and Division III programs, the Sewanee men's and women's cross country teams finished strong at the Rhodes Invitational Saturday.
As a team, the men finished sixth while the women's squad placed fifth.
In the men's race, Clay Bond (26:55) finished 12th, followed closely by Hudson Robb (26:58-13th). Also, Amiel Emerson (50th), Jason Grimes (54th), and Tyler Wilcox (71st) each had a personal-best time to round out Sewanee's top-five finishers.
On the women's side, the top-five runners for the Tigers all crossed the finish line all within one minute of each other. Led by Amy Lee (19:50-14th) and Ansley McDurmon (20th), no Sewanee runner placed outside the top-50. Additionally, Willow Smith (29th), Cate Hargrove (44th), and Zoe Dubin (45th) rounded out the Tigers' best finishes.
“I am very pleased with our results today,” said head coach Jeff Heitzenrater. “Both teams did a great job of competing all the way to the finish. The :58 second 1-to-5 split on the women's team is one of the smallest gaps for any Sewanee team in the last 15 years. Once we get a few sick people healthy, we will see more great results the second half of the season. This team is working hard and will see some fast times the next few weeks.”
The Tigers return to action, when Sewanee plays host to its annual Tiger Twilight Invitational October 6.
