SEWANEE, Tenn. 3/28/12 – The Sewanee Tigers dropped a 9-3 decision to the \#8 Piedmont College Lions today in non-conference baseball action at Montgomery Field in Sewanee.
With the loss Sewanee drops to 9-12 on the season and ends a four-game win streak.
Piedmont got on the scoreboard first with two runs in the top of the second inning.
Sewanee responded with a run in the bottom of the second frame.
Alan Komorowski singled to lead off the inning and scored on a
Scott Ward double to deep right field.
The Tigers tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the fourth inning. With two outs
Wilson Nealy doubled to right centerfield and scored on an RBI single by
Blake Williams.
The Lions built their lead to 7-2 with two runs in the fifth inning and single runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings.
Sewanee score its third run of the game in the bottom of the eighth inning. Pinch hitter
Allen Thigpen reached first base on a Piedmont error and advanced to second base on a wild pitch and to third on a ground out. Komorowski chased Thigpen home with his second hit of the afternoon, a liner single to centerfield.
Piedmont put the game out of reach with two more runs in the top of the ninth inning to make the score 9-3.
The Tigers were outhit by the Lions 10-7. Komorowski led the Sewanee offense with two hits. Ward, Nealy, Williams,
James Snover and
Jack Whaley each had one hit.
Hugh Osteen was charged with the loss on the mound. Eight different pitchers worked for Sewanee in the game.
The Tigers will return to action this weekend when they host Oglethorpe University in a three-game SCAC series. A doubleheader is scheduled for Saturday beginning at 12:00 noon. A single game will be played on Sunday at 1:00 pm.
