AUBURNDALE, Fla. 3/19/12 – The Union College Dutchmen defeated the Sewanee Tigers 5-3 today at the RussMatt Invitational in Auburndale, Fla.
Ryne Sullivan and
Jack Rogers drove runs home in the top of the third inning to stake the Tigers to a 2-0 lead.
James Snover was hit by a pitch. Sullivan tripled Snover home and then scored on a sacrifice fly by Rogers.
A three-run fifth inning gave the Dutchmen a 3-2 lead.
Sewanee tied the game at 3-3 in the top of the seventh inning on an RBI triple by
Allen Thigpen, but Union added two runs in the home half of the seventh to regain a 5-3 lead.
Austin Shea was the losing pitcher in relief of starter
Marshall Ussery. Ussery allowed three runs on six hits, struck out four and walked only two in five complete innings of work. Tiger pitchers combined to strike out ten Dutchmen batters.
The Tigers were led at the plate by Sullivan with a 3-for-5 effort that included a double, a triple and one RBI.
Alan Komorowski and
Nate Barnett contributed two hits each to the eight-hit Sewanee attack.
Sewanee will take a day off tomorrow and will return to action on Wednesday when it takes on UMASS-Dartmouth at 2:00 pm at the Lake Myrtle Complex in Auburndale, Fla.
