Irwin Powers Tigers to Doubleheader Sweep of Rust College

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SEWANEE, Tenn. 4/7/11 - Senior Taylor Irwin (Brentwood, Tenn., Battle Ground Academy) belted a homerun in both games and drove in seven runs to lead the Sewanee Tigers to a doubleheader sweep of the Rust Bearcats today at Montgomery Field in Sewanee. The Tigers came out on top 12-4 in the first game and took the nightcap 14-4.

The Tigers improve to 10-14 on the season.

The two homers were the first two of the year for the hot-hitting Irwin and the seven RBI give him a team-leading 27 on the season.

Sewanee got on the board quickly in Game 1 by posting a three-run first inning. The Tigers added three more in the bottom of the third inning to take a 6-0 lead over the visiting Bearcats.

Rust finally got on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth when they pushed two runs across the plate.

The Tigers countered with single runs in the fourth and fifth inning to build their lead back to six runs at 8-2.

Rust cut back into the Tiger lead with a two-run fifth inning, but the Tigers put the game away in the bottom of the sixth inning with four runs highlighted by a two-run blast by Irwin to make the final score 12-4

Joe Reilly (Milton, Ga., Mt. Pisgah) led the 15-hit Sewanee attack with a 3-for-4 effort at the plate. Irwin, Chris Mauro (Washington, D.C., St. Alban's)Jack Rogers (Atlanta, Ga., Lovett)Wilson Nealy (Nashville, Tenn., Montgomery Bell Academy) and Ryne Sullivan (Metarie, La., Isidore Newman) all contributed two hits. Irwin had three RBI. 

Colin Barrera (Ponte Vedra, Fla., Providence) went the distance to pick up the win on the mound for the Tigers working seven innings while allowing four earned runs on seven hits.

In the second game of the doubleheader Sewanee used a pair of six-run innings to cruise to the 14-4 victory. The Tigers sent ten batters to the plate in both the second and sixth innings.

Irwin picked up three hits and four RBI in the game. Reilly, 
Alan Komorowski (Rochester, N.Y., Aquinas Institute), Sullivan and Rogers each had two hits.

Austin Shea (Austin, Tex., St. Stephen's) pitched a complete game for the win. Shea gave up four runs, all earned, on six hits during seven innings of work

The Tigers travel to Danville, Ky. this weekend for a three-game SCAC series with the Centre Colonels. The first game is scheduled for Saturday beginning at 1 pm EDST.
