Box Score: Sewanee at Dallas
DALLAS, Texas (Oct. 7, 2011) – After dropping a pair of close SCAC matches last weekend the Sewanee men's soccer team returned to its winning ways Friday night as the Tigers defeated league foe Dallas 2-1.
With the win Sewanee improved to 6-3-1 overall, with a 1-2 record in league action. Dallas fell to 2-6-1 overall and now sits at 0-3 against conference opponents.
"We started the game with good energy and purpose,” said head coach
David Poggi. “We couldn't find a way to score and then against the run of play they got a soft goal on a lack of communication in the backline which left the Dallas player alone with Conrad."
After Dallas¹ Michael Chapman found the back of the net in the 19th minute of play, the Crusaders closed out the first half with an early 1-0 lead
Despite the quick deficit Sewanee kept at it in second half, as forward
Matt Lightfoot tied the match at 1-1 with his eight goal of the season in the 52nd minute of action.
"After the break, we regrouped and played good soccer,” said Poggi. “We created many good chances and were finally rewarded by Matt's strike. "It was classic Lightfoot, he had worked hard up until then and was rewarded with an important goal for us".
As play continued the Tigers offense stay aggressive as defender
Solly Thomas converted home the game-winner with a little less than 20 minutes to play in the match.
"Solly's goal was a powerful shot from about 35-yards out that the keeper couldn't hold on to,' said Poggi. "He was in the right place at the right time, but the game was far from over.”
After posting six shots in the opening half of play, Sewanee kept the pressure on the Dallas backline as play got deeper into the match. In fact, in the second half alone the Tigers fired 15 shots, which gave Sewanee a 21-8 advantage overall in shots.
"We couldn't get a third goal even with a good number of chances,” said Poggi. “This kept Dallas in it and they fought hard until the end. It was one of those games but we matched their pressure with a great defensive effort for the win".
Leading the offense was junior midfielder
Devon Ball, who had five shots. Senior midfielder
Mark Meyer added four shots on the night (team-high two on goal), with Lightfoot and senior
Stuart Maxey each having three attempts.
Sewanee closes out its two-match road trip with a 1:00 p.m. contest Sunday at Austin College. The Kangaroo¹s have lost their last four matches, but did manage to force a 2-2 2OT draw last season against the Tigers.
"Austin College is a much better team than its conference record,” Poggi said. “Our matches have always been very close. They have several quality players who have been and will be difficult for us to manage, so we need to be very organized and work hard until the end".
