Dickie McCarthy enters his 17th season with Sewanee Athletics, and he is in his sixth year working in an administrative role as Assistant Athletic Director of Internal Operations and Compliance.
After 12 seasons and 106 wins, Dickie McCarthy, the winningest women's basketball coach in the program's history, accepted the Director of Internal Operations position in the summer of 2014. He was elevated to Assistant Athletic Director in March of 2016.
“Dickie brings outstanding skills to the athletic department’s internal operation,” said athletic director Mark Webb. “ He is highly professional and organized, and I’m delighted that he accepted this new role in the department.”
In 2005, McCarthy led the Tigers to the second most wins (19) in school history and was named the SCAC Coach of the Year.
On Dec. 10, 2016, McCarthy secured his 100th career win with 79-70 victory over Berea (Ky.)
McCarthy played basketball at Sewanee for two years before transferring to the University of Georgia, where he received his bachelor’s degree. He was a member of the 1974-75 Tiger team that finished 20-7 and received a bid to the inaugural Division III NCAA Tournament.
“It has been a rewarding 12 years coaching the women’s basketball team here at Sewanee,” said McCarthy. “I was blessed to coach many amazing student-athletes and hope that, in some way, I have touched their lives as much as they have touched mine.”
McCarthy is married to the former MarthaLee Warner, and they have two children, Kelli and Dr. Daniel McCarthy, and six grandchildren, Drew, Ella, Lily, Hannah, Sadie and Suzanna.
