Walter Bryant, C'49 was the Sewanee athletic director for 30 years and was instrumental in the formation of the Collegiate Athletic Conference (CAC), the institution of both women and minorities as student-athletes and in the hiring of legendary coaches Shirley Majors and Ted Bitondo among others. He also was the head golf coach and assistant football coach during his tenure. As a student, Bryant was a letterman on the football team. Prior to his time as a student-athlete at Sewanee, Bryant served in the European Theatre during World War Two and was awarded a Service Medal with two Bronze Stars.
