After serving on the front lines in France during World War I, Moore returned to the United States hoping to become a coach. After coaching at La Grange High School in La Grange, Ga., Moore accepted his first coaching position at Sewanee in 1924. At Sewanee, Moore served as the head track and field coach while assisting in football. Under his leadership, the Tigers won the 1924 S.I.A.A. and Southern Conference Championships. After his time on the Mountain, Moore rebuild Mercer University’s program from 1925-27. Two years later, Moore moved to LSU where his career continued to grow.
Moore coached for 18 seasons at LSU. During his tenure, Moore led the Tigers to an unprecedented 14 SEC titles, five world records, won eight NCAA titles and collected 29 All-America honors. In 1948, Moore became the Commissioner of the Southeastern Conference and would hold that office for 18 years. Moore has been inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame, the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame, the Helms Hall of Fame and the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame. Moore also served as the first president of the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame and was an assistant coach on the 1932 Olympic team. After retiring, Moore resided at his home in Winchester, Tenn.
