ATLANTA - The Southern Athletic Association (SAA) has announced brackets for the 2019 SAA Volleyball and Field Hockey Tournaments. Additionally, the bracket for the Women's Soccer Tournament has been updated with match times announced.
The Sewanee field hockey will enter the 2019 SAA Tournament as the five-seed and will play host and 4-seed Transylvania in a first round game on Friday at 1 p.m. ET / 12 p.m. CT. The winner will face top-seed and regular season champion Centre on Saturday.
With Sewanee, Concordia Wisconsin and Transy all finishing with a 1-3 record in conference play, the tiebreaker scenario played out as follows. CUW earned the 3-seed based on goal differential of minus one. Sewanee and Transy each had a difference of minus nine. The Pioneers earned the 4-seed based on their win over the Tigers on Oct. 12 in overtime.
The teams split their regular season matchups this season at Puett Field on Oct. 12-13. Despite falling in overtime in the conference matchup on Oct. 12, the Tigers (5-10, 1-3) bounced back to a 6-3 win the next day over the Pioneers (3-12, 1-3).
This will be a rematch of last season's play-in game in the conference tournament, as the Pioneers edged the Tigers, 2-1, on a late penalty corner.
Sewanee holds a 56-7-2 record all-time over Transylvania.
The Sewanee volleyball program will open the 2019 Volleyball Tournament on Friday on the campus of Birmingham-Southern College. The Tigers (19-9, 8-6), who enter as the 4-seed, will face off with 5-seed Millsaps (17-13, 6-8) in the final match of the quarterfinal schedule at 7 p.m.
Sewanee took both regular season matches via the sweep over Millsaps this season.
The Tigers, who are seventh in the latest NCAA Region Rankings, have won the last four meetings with the Majors. However, it is Millsaps that holds the lead in the all-time series since 1991, posting a 37-18 record.
After defeating Hendrix, 2-0, in the quarterfinals on Sunday from Puett Field, Sewanee (8-6-2, 4-2-1) will now travel to Danville, Ky. to take on No. 2 Rhodes College (12-5-0, 5-2-0) in the semifinals Friday night at 6 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. CT. Rhodes advanced to the semis after a 4-0 win over Oglethorpe in the quarterfinals.
The Lynx claimed a 1-0 win over Sewanee in the regular season matchup on Oct. 11 from Puett Field. Posting a 21-13-2 record all-time, Rhodes has won the last five meetings and is unbeaten in 11 of the last 12 meetings.
The Tigers last played the Lynx in the postseason in 2016, also a semifinal match, where Rhodes defeated Sewanee, 3-0.
The previous year, 2015, also in the semifinals, the Lynx edged Sewanee in penalty kicks, 4-3, after the teams tied with one goal each after 110 minutes.
