Jess McClelland enters her first season as an assistant coach for the Tigers' cross country and track and field programs.
A 2014 graduate of Christopher Newport University, was a 14-time all-conference performer on the track, breaking five school records and two conference records (indoor mile, outdoor 1500). Additionally, McClelland was a member of five Capital Athletic Conference championship teams. Individually, she qualified for the 2014 NCAA championships in the 1500 meters.
Off the track, McClelland earned all-conference honors every season as a cross country runner. As a member of Christopher Newport's three conference championship teams, she also earned all-region honors as a senior. Also, he was selected as a national all-academic honor roll member her senior season graduating, magna cum laude, with a bachelors degree in Biology from CNU.
Since leaving Newport News, Va., McClelland served as a graduate assistant at Otterbein University in Westerville, Ohio from 2014-16. There, she earned a masters degree in Allied Health (Exercise and Health Science) while coaching distance runners and jumpers. While at Otterbein, the Cardinals' women's cross country team won their first-ever OAC Championship in 2015. Overall, McClelland coached All-OAC honorees in cross country, 5k, 10k, and the high jump.
A native of Virginia, McClelland is a USTFCCCA Level 1 Certified Coach and a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS).
