Sewanee Finishes Maroon Classic 4-0 with Wins over Methodist, Randolph

SALEM, Va. - The Sewanee volleyball team completed the perfect weekend at the Maroon Classic at Roanoke College with two more wins Saturday at the Cregger Center, defeating Methodist in four sets before ending the weekend with a sweep of Randolph on Saturday.

The Tigers finish as co-champions of the Maroon Classic, joining Bridgewater, who also went 4-0.

With a 9 a.m. ET start, it was safe to say that both teams got off to a slow start in the first set. Sewanee called a timeout down 6-1 early in the set. The Purple and Gold rallied to tie the first set at 16 points apiece en route to a 25-23 opening set.

However, Methodist responded with a second set victory, 25-16, thanks to no attack errors and a .556 hitting percentage (15-0-27).

The Tigers would respond after the Monarchs tied the set, defeating MU 25-21 and 25-17 in the third and fourth sets to claim the victory.

In the third and fourth sets combined, Sewanee had an attack percentage of .313 (27-6-67), compared to Methodist's .162 (24-12-74).

Destiny Stewart recorded her second double-double of the year with 21 kills and 15 digs. The freshman had a .381 attack percentage (21-5-42) with six service aces.

Olivia Nichols also had a double-double, posting 13 kills and 10 digs in the match.

Peyton Parent had 14 digs, while Constance Connolly, who tallied 24 assists, also had 10 digs in the win.

Ashley Beardsley had 20 kills and 10 digs in the loss for Methodist.

In the afternoon match, the Tigers (4-3) fought with the Wildcats in the first set with a 25-23 victory before taking the next two easily, 25-11 and 25-20.

Stewart, who finished with 58 kills and a .341 hitting mark (58-15-126) on the weekend, ended the day with 16 kills and two blocks. The freshman was named to the All-Tournament Team and earned co-Most Outstanding Player honors.

Stephanie Price, who was also selected to the All-Tournament Team recorded nine kills and four blocks, while Connolly assisted on 17 kills.

Parent totaled 16 digs in the contest to go along with two service aces.

Sewanee next hosts Covenant for the Tigers' home opener. First serve is scheduled for 6 p.m. inside Juhan Gymnasium.
