SALEM, Va. - The Sewanee Tigers bounced back from their opening weekend in Birmingham, Ala. to take both of their matches in the opening day of the Maroon Classic, hosted by Roanoke College, Friday afternoon at the Cregger Center.
Sewanee 3, Hollins 0
The Tigers opened the day collecting their first win of the 2017 campaign with a sweep of Hollins, 25-18, 25-13, 25-9. After a slow start in the opening set with a .050 (12-10-40) attacking percentage, the Purple and Gold put it into high gear, combining for a .414 (29-5-58) hitting percentage in the final two sets.
For the match, Sewanee finished with a .265 percentage (41-15-98) on the attack, while Hollins was unable to get out of negative territory, posting a -.024 (13-15-85) attack.
Destiny Stewart led all attackers in the opener with 11 kills, and with only two errors on 27 total attacks, the freshman tallied a .333 hitting mark. She also tallied seven digs.
Sewanee 3, Ferrum 0
The Purple and Gold (2-3) took their hot hitting from the first match to the evening cap, finishing with a .250 attack percentage (35-14-84) in the sweep of Ferrum (25-18, 25-18, 25-20).
Stewart, again, led all attackers with 10 kills and three service aces, and she finished the day with 21 kills on a .327 percentage on the attack.
Price recorded nine kills and six blocks in the win, while Constance Connolly recorded 11 assists and four service aces.
The Tigers will continue action in the Maroon Classic on Saturday, taking on Methodist and Randolph.
