2017 SEASON PREVIEW: Volleyball

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Sewanee Volleyball team is preparing for the 2017 season this weekend at Birmingham-Southern College.

The Tigers will play three matches in the McAttack Bash this weekend, including Covenant Friday night at 8 p.m., and two matches Saturday with Washington and Lee (10 a.m.) and Maryville (Tenn.) (4 p.m.).

Rebecca Rowan returns for her sophomore campaign with 142 kills from 2016, averaging 1.69 per set. The Jacksonville, Fla. native helped with 17 blocks a season ago.

Senior Caroline Owens will enter her final season with the Tigers 86 digs shy of 500 in her career. In 78 career matches, the Houston, Texas native has 261 career kills, including 141 last season.

Mason Gardella tallied a .219 attacking percentage (132 kills-55 errors-352 attempts) in 20 of the 26 matches played last season. The Fleming Island, Fla. native finished with 23 total blocks, five solo blocks for Sewanee.

Leading the block brigade for the Tigers is sophomore Stephanie Price. The Grayson, Ga. native posted 19 solo blocks and 60 total blocks, with 104 kills.

Splitting time setting for the Purple and Gold a year ago were Anna Wilson and Constance Connolly. The sophomores played in all 26 matches a year ago. Connolly, a Memphis, Tenn. native, tallied 394 assists, while Wilson, a Brentwood, Tenn. native, assisted on 327 attacks.

The Tigers welcome five newcomers in 2017: Destiny Stewart, Melissa Mueller, Olivia Nichols, Claire Crow and Haley Gauthier.

Sewanee's home opener will be against rival Covenant on Wednesday, Sept. 13 at 6 p.m. at Juhan Gymnasium.
