Volleyball Falls In Opening Round Of SAA Tournament

 

CONWAY, Ark. (November 6, 2015)  -  The Sewanee women's volleyball team fell short in their opening game of the SAA Tournament against Birmingham-Southern.  The Panthers swept the Tigers 3 to 0 in the first-round game held in Grove Gymnasium at Hendrix College.

The Panthers won three straight sets with a hitting percentage of 0.259 and 38 kills.  They were led by Laura Van Peursem and Jeneva Salter with 11 kills each.  The Birmingham-Southern defense was led by Lauren Bedford with 23 digs.

Maggie Stanford led the Sewanee offensive effort with 10 kills while the defense was led by Sara Jayne Sutton with 16 digs.  After trailing 18 to 6 in the third set, the Tigers rallied to close the margin to 21 to 14.  This rally fell short as the Panthers won the third set 25 to 15.

With the win, Birmingham-Southern moves on to the semi-final round on Saturday.

Friday marked the final collegiate game for five Sewanee volleyball seniors: Caroline Montgomery, Desiree Kamerman, Casey Hassett, Maggie Stanford and Lucy Riddle.
