SEWANEE, Tenn. (April 2, 2017) – The No. 16 Sewanee women's tennis team improved to 12-4 overall this season with a 9-0 win against Southern Athletic Association (SAA) Berry, Sunday.
The Tigers have won six straight matches, including the last three by 9-0 scores.
"We had a great team effort today overcoming a lot of adversity. At this point of the season teams are battling injuries, illness, and multiple academic demands," said head coach Conchie Shackelford. "We have had a lot of girls stepping up to meet the challenges. Abbie Vaughn and Maura McCrary were both outstanding in today's win."
Sewanee opened the match by winning all three doubles contests. At No. 2 and No. 3, Sewanee won matches by 8-1 scores. At the second position, Ellie Czura and Christina Merchant defeated Harrilla and Cornell while at No. 3 Bea Benavides and Maura McCrary topped McCray and Dills.
In singles play, Sewanee did not drop a set. At No. 1, Davila improved to 6-0 this weekend with a 6-2, 7-5 victory against Cerny. A court over, Merchant hammered Byrket 6-0, 6-1 while at No. 3 Haley Tucker rolled past McCray by the same score.
Finally, McCrary completed a great match wit ha 6-0, 6-1 win against Dills at No. 6.
Sewanee will put its winning streak on the line with a match Friday at long-time rival and No. 1 ranked Emory.
