SEWANEE, Tenn. (Sept. 27, 2013) – Led by sophomore student-athletes Lindsey Liles and Annie Veron, the Sewanee women's tennis team closed out first day action of the 2013 ITA Regionals Friday.
Below is a breakdown of each draw.
Main Draw Singles
Elizabeth Lucas earned a first-round win over Katherine Webb of Southern Athletic Association (SAA) foe Oglethorpe by a 6-2, 7-5 score. Unfortunately, Lucas would fall in the second round against Melissa Goodman of Emory in two 6-1 sets.
Liles advanced to Saturday's third round with a perfect 6-0, 6-0 victory against Anna Volkov of SAA rival Rhodes. Liles will now take on Danielle Truitt of Emory, Saturday.
Additionally, Veron joined Liles in the third round with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Caffrey Francis of conference member Oglethorpe. Veron is scheduled to take on Michelle Demeo of Emory, Saturday.
Atlantic Draw Singles
Mariah Smith earned a first-round victory over Brooke Mastmeir-Pittman of Agnes Scott. Unfortunately, Smith lost a close second round contest against Heidi Seabaugh of Berry.
South Draw Singles
Natalie Van Why earned her first win after she defeated Meredith Barber of Mississippi College. In the second round, Why lost a 6-0, 6-1 decision against Tricia Groover of Oglethorpe.
Teammate Emily Sirbaugh earned a pair of victories, Friday. Sirbaugh first defeated Abby Smith of Berry by a 7-5, 7-5 score. Then later in the day, Sirbaugh stayed alive with a long 7-6, 2-6, 10-7 win over Lindsey Geving of Covenant.
Main Draw Doubles
The Tiger sophomore duo of Liles and Veron won two matches, which advanced Sewanee into Saturday's quarterfinals. The Tiger team swept Tudor and Liu of Centre, 8-0, and then topped Patel and Hunt of Meredith, 8-3.
B Draw Doubles
Johnston and Reeves won an 8-3 first-round match against Latimer and Ledbetter of Agnes Scott. The Sewanee doubles team is scheduled to take on Geving and Dunlap of Covenant College, Saturday.
