HANOVER, Ind. (Sept. 18, 2016) – A goal late in regulation and then the game-winning shot in overtime by Anna Cornacchione led defending Heartland Conference champion Hanover to a 3-2 overtime win against the Sewanee women's soccer team, Sunday.
With Hanover down 2-1 late in the game, Cornacchione fired in the equalizer off a great cross from Jessie Comorosky with less than a minute to play in regulation.
Then late in the overtime period, the Hanover forward was at it again as she dribbled past the Tiger keeper from 16 yards out and fired in the game-winner.
Hanover initially got on the scoreboard when Haley Rees scored off a Cornacchione pass midway through the first half.
Sewanee tied the score at 1-1 midway through the second half as senior Shelby Meckstroth netted her fifth goal this season. Later in the second half, the Tigers took a 2-1 lead when fellow senior Elizabeth Eidson fired home her first goal of 2016.
Overall, both teams were fairly even statistically. Hanover led in shots by a 13-12 margin while the Tigers finished with a 4-2 advantage in corners.
Midfielder Mary "Sissy" Frank led Sewanee with six shots while Cornacchione paced Hanover with four attempts.
Sewanee returns to action with a 2:30 p.m. (EST) SAA match at Berry next Saturday.
