Tigers score 10 goals in each half to advance to SAA semifinals

SEWANEE, Tenn. (April 21, 2017) – The Sewanee women's lacrosse team scored 10 goals in each half as the Tigers advanced to the Southern Athletic Association (SAA) semifinals with a 20-11 win over Oglethorpe, Friday.

The Tigers, who are 14-4 overall, advance to play Berry on Sunday in Rome, Ga.

Sewanee opened the game with an early 4-0 lead. During that stretch, Alden Woolford, Kit Sommi, and Brooke Winfield all scored. OU got on the scoreboard when Elena Gierok scored with 21 minutes left in the opening half. That goal sparked a 3-0 run by the Stormy Petrels.

Sewanee slowed the OU spurt when Sommi scored again at 16:02. However, Samantha Chap answered back for Oglethorpe with a goal less than a minute later.

Both teams continued to trade scores before halftime. Preston Cooper scored three times for the Tigers in the final 13 minutes while Woolford and Mary Kate Myers also fired in shots.

After OU pulled to within one, 10-9, early in the second half, Sewanee finally took control. A 6-0 run by the purple and gold pushed Sewanee back in front by seven, 16-9. Kelly Thomsen, Winfield, Cooper, Sommi, and Sydney Beldock all scored for Sewanee during that run.

Hannah Bradley, Myers, Molly Elkins, and Farrell Guest closed out the goals for the Tigers.

Overall, Sewanee outshot Oglethorpe 40-27. The Tigers also finished with more groundballs and successful clears. Both teams were even in draws at 16-16.

In goal, Brianna Young earned the win after she finished with three saves. Senior Crawford Horan added five stops over the final 52:44 minutes.
