Murphy's outstanding play helps Sewanee defeat Hendrix, 22-9

SEWANEE, Tenn. (Feb. 28, 2014) – Four goals and four assists by junior Ellie Murphy helped the Sewanee women's lacrosse team to a 22-9 win over Southern Athletic Association (SAA) foe Hendrix, Friday, at Puett Field.

Overall, Murphy finished with eight points and five shots. As a team, Sewanee now has a 4-1 overall record and a 2-0 mark in SAA play.

After Sally Anne Greenwood opened the scoring off an assist from Murphy, Hendrix answered back with a transition goal from Raychl Reger.

Mallory Grimm then pushed the Tiger lead to 2-1 with a score two minutes later.

After Hendrix tied the match one final time, Sewanee's offense responded in a big way. The Tigers scored eight of the next 10 goals to lead 10-4 with 16:07 remaning in the first half.

During that stretch, Murphy found the back of the net three times while Greenwood scored twice. Additionally, Katie Riddle and Wittney Reed also scored.

Sewanee then closed the half on a 6-1 run. After two straight goals from Riddle and Ella Richardson, Grimm and Elsie Spencer beat Hendrix goalkeeper Rebecca Alexander.

In the second half, Payton Fields, Janie Hannon, Brita Brudvig, Murphy, and Eliza Havener all scored.

As a team, Sewanee finished with 23 draw controls, 41 shots, and 25 groundballs.

On defense, Greenwood added two caused turnovers, six draws, and two groundballs.

Additionally, Woodli Krutek, Murphy, Richardson, Spencer, Merrill Andrews, and Dori Wilson also caused turnovers.

In goal, freshman Crawford Horan won her fourth match with three saves.

Sewanee will now step outside SAA play for a noon contest, Sunday against Carthage.
