HOUSTON (May 9, 2017) – Led by Meghan Symonds, the No. 26 ranked Sewanee women's golf team is currently in 11th place after the first round of the NCAA Division III Women's Golf Championship at Bay Oaks Country Club.
Symonds, who is ranked 39th as an individual, opened the four-day event with a four-over par 76. Starting on hole 10, Symonds was five over after the opening nine holes. However, on the back nine, the sophomore rallied. She finished with three birdies and four pars to go one under par coming into the clubhouse.
As a team, Sewanee opened with a 324 total. Southern Athletic Association (SAA) rival and defending National Champion Rhodes leads the field after a 301. No. 1 ranked George Fox and No. 2 ranked Williams are tied for second, two strokes back.
Sophomore Sarah Battye is currently tied for 45th after her opening round 81. Teammate Sophia Morrill is a stroke behind Battye and is tied for 52nd while Mary Elizabeth Benton is currently tied for 72nd after an opening-round 85.
Finally, Natalie Javadi is tied for 81st after she fired an 18-hole 86.
