Late Rally by Softball Comes Up Short in Doubleheader

DECATUR, Ga. - The Sewanee softball team, despite a seventh inning rally in game two of the twinbill, fell in both games of the doubleheader to Agnes Scott, 10-1 and 6-4, Saturday afternoon at Oakhurst Park.

HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME 1
-Despite Sewanee getting on the board in the opening inning via a Rachel Hoffman RBI single, the contest was all Scotties when they took their turn at the plate. The team scored nine runs in the first two innings en route to a 10-1 win.

HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME 2
-Agnes Scott scored the opening run in the bottom of the first, but the Purple and Gold responded in the top of the second inning. After Rachel Hoffman led off the game with a base knock, Peri Prestwood moved her over on a sacrifice.

-After Miranda Townsend reached base on an infield hit, Charlsey Shirey brought her home with a productive groundout to even the score at a run apiece.

-However, the middle innings were the factor for the Tigers, as they allowed five runs and trailed 6-1 after six innings.

-The Tigers made it interesting in the seventh inning. Taylor Wagner doubled to left center to bring home Rowan Jordan.

-After a groundout for the second out of the inning, Prestwood kept the game alive by reaching base on an error. On the play, Wagner and Maggie Willis scored to bring the tying run to the plate, but it would the closest the Tigers would get.

SEWANEE KEY STATISTICS
-The Tigers recorded 15 hits in the two games. Rachel Hoffman recorded two hits in each game, while Taylor Wagner went 2-for-4 in the second game of the twinbill.

-Kendell Goodrum (0-3) suffered the loss in both games, but in the second game, she allowed one earned run in six innings.

AGNES SCOTT KEY STATISTICS
-Jessica Costero went 3-of-4 in game two of the doubleheader with an RBI and two runs scored.

-Kayla Spinks (1-2) earned the win in game one, while Caitlin Weaver (1-2) won the second game.

UP NEXT
With Sunday's doubleheader against Blackburn rained out, the Tigers' home opener will be pushed back to Wednesday against Covenant at 2 p.m.
