Tigers Split Thursday Doubleheader with Blackburn

SEWANEE, Tenn. - The Sewanee softball team went away with a win in Thursday's twinbill with Blackburn (Ill.), winning the opener 5-2 before falling 11-3 Thursday afternoon from the Tiger Softball Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED, GAME 1
-The Tigers broke the scoring in the bottom of the third with a Katie Bender RBI single, scoring Rachel Hoffman.

-In the fourth, a Jackie O'Reilly two-run home run pushed the contest to a 3-0 lead.

-The Beavers tallied two runs in the fifth, but the Tigers added a run in the bottom of the frame on a groundout.

-Leading 4-2 headed into the bottom of the sixth inning, Sewanee brought home a key insurance run on an error.

-The Beavers went down in order off of starter O'Reilly to secure the win.

HOW IT HAPPENED, GAME 2
-The Beavers started the contest with six runs in the first inning.

-Jackie O'Reilly connected with her second homer of the day and her fifth of the year to break the shutout in the bottom of the first.

-Blackburn added a run in the second, three runs in the fourth and a run in the fifth to push the lead to 11-1.

-Sewanee added two runs in the bottom half of the fifth, but the visitors earned the doubleheader split with the run-rule victory.

SEWANEE KEY STATISTICS
-Rachel Hoffman tallied two hits and scored a run in the game one victory.

-Caroline Sweetin recorded two hits and reached base in all three plate appearances with an RBI.

-Jackie O'Reilly (3-6) tossed a complete game in the opener, allowing one unearned run on five hits and fanning three batters. At the plate, the freshman hit a homer in each game, and she finished the day with four runs scored and three RBI.

BLACKBURN KEY STATISTICS
-Hannah Goett and Emmily Cato each recorded two hits in game two. Cato drove in two runs.

-Halie Fransen (4-2) earned the win in the evening cap, allowing three runs on seven hits in five innings.

UP NEXT
Sewanee will next compete in THE Spring Games in Clermont, Fla. The team opens action Saturday with contests with Elmhurst and Farmingdale State.
