Softball Suffers Twice in Season Opener at Agnes Scott

DECATUR, Ga. - Sewanee softball fell twice on Friday night to open the 2018 season, dropping the opening game of the doubleheader, 7-4, and falling in game two, 5-4.

-Sewanee opened the night by scoring the first run of the 2018 season. As Katie Bender swiped second base, Jackie O'Reilly, on third, came home after an errant throw by the Agnes Scott catcher.

-The Tigers plated three batters in the inning. Rachel Hoffman started the rally with a single to bring in O'Reilly.

-Taylor Wagner followed with a single down the line to score Bender, and the next batter, Charlsey Shirey brought Hoffman home on a fielder's choice.

-In the bottom half of the frame, the lead did not last long for the visitors. The Scotties scored four times in the frame to tie the contest at four runs a piece.

-In the sixth, Agnes Scott broke the tie with two runs in the inning to seal the victory.

-In the second game, the offense for the Scotties rolled into game two with a first inning run.

-Sewanee's bats came to life in the fourth and fifth innings. In the fourth, Miranda Townsend gave the Purple and Gold the first lead of the game with a two-run RBI single, scoring Wagner and Caroline Sweetin.

-In the fifth, Hoffman brought home Katrina Ramos on an RBI single before Sweetin scored Bender on a sacrifice fly.

-Leading 4-1 headed into the bottom half of the fifth, Agnes Scott scored twice in the frame, but the Tigers kept the lead heading into the late innings.

-In the bottom of the seventh, Cecilla Siegel recorded a walk-off double to steal game two away from the visitors.

-Taylor Wagner finished the night with three hits, including a multi-hit game in game one, with an RBI and a run scored.

-Jackie O"Reilly scored two runs in the opening game of the doubleheader, and she finished with three hits and walks each.

-Katie Bender and Rachel Hoffman recorded two hits each in game two.

-In game one, O'Reilly (0-1) went the distance for the Tigers, allowing seven earned on 12 hits and punching out four.

-Caroline Sweetin (0-1) allowed four earned in 6.1 innings in game two.

-Alexei Young recorded a multi-hit game in the opening game. For the doubleheader, the center fielder had three hits and RBI each.

-Caitlin Weaver (1-1) allowed one earned run on seven hits in the complete game win in game one.

-Kayla Quesenberry (1-0) tossed two shutout innings of relief in game two to seal the victory, striking out two batters.

With Sunday's home opener versus Emory & Henry postponed, Sewanee will next suit up on Feb. 23 to open Southern Athletic Association play with No. 19 Berry.
