SEWANEE, Tenn. (March 29, 2017) – Despite a great effort, the Sewanee softball team dropped a midweek doubleheader against regional-rival Covenant, Wednesday.
The Tigers fell in the opener 2-0 and then dropped the second game by a score of 6-1.
Early in game one, Sewanee starter Sydney Leibfritz and Covenant starter Cris Gant were locked in a pitchers' dual.
Neither offense scored over the first four innings. In the top of the fifth, Covenant broke through. The Lady Scots scored both runs when Jordan Brett hit a deep homerun over the left field fence.
Covenant reliever Joni Johnson closed out the final three innings for the Lady Scots.
Rachel Hoffman led Sewanee at the plate with one hit.
In the second game, Covenant scored one run in the second, three in the third, and two in the fourth inning. Sewanee's lone run came in the bottom of the sixth when Caroline Sweetin singled in Katie Roth.
Sweetin finished 2-for-3 in game two while Hoffman and Taylor Wagner finished with one hit.
Sewanee returns to action with a three-game series at Centre beginning Saturday.
