Despite an improvement from the offense, Sewanee falls in doubleheader against Rhodes

SEWANEE, Tenn. (March 24, 2017) – Despite one of its better offensive performances of the season, the Sewanee softball team dropped a doubleheader against Southern Athletic Association (SAA) rival Rhodes, Friday.

The Tigers lost the opener 10-0 before falling in the second contest, 17-7.

In the opener, Rachel Hoffman, Charlsey Shirey, and Amanda Watters led Sewanee at the plate with one hit each.

Anna Kulp, Christine Hume, and Katelynn Bresler all had three hits for Rhodes. Rhodes starter Bri Maniscalco earned her sixth win after she tossed a complete-game shutout while striking out five.

In the nightcap, Sewanee fell behind 8-0 after the top half of the first inning. However, in the bottom of the inning, Sewanee's bats came alive. After a double from Katie Roth, Hoffman hammered a two-run homerun to left center. Later in the inning, Watters scored Sarah-Kate Moon.

In the bottom of the fourth, Taylor Wagner hit an RBI single to left that scored Sydney Leibfritz. Two batters later, Caroline Sweetin blasted a three-run homerun.

Overall, Shirey again played well with two hits while Sweetin finished 2-for-3 with three RBI and a run scored. Hoffman was 1-for-3 with a run scored and two RBI.

Hume led Rhodes with three hits, three runs scored, and four RBI. One of her hits was a homerun.

Sewanee and Rhodes will wrap up their series at noon, Saturday.
