SEWANEE, Tenn. - The Sewanee track and field teams will gear up for the 2019 outdoor season with three indoor meets, two coming inside the Fowler Center.
SCHEDULE SYNOPSIS: Sewanee will open the indoor schedule Feb. 2 with the Tiger Indoor Invitational. The outdoor season will take place March 3 at Berry College.
SAA CHAMPIONSHIPS: The 2019 Southern Athletic Association Championships will take place April 26-27 on the campus of Hendrix College. Sewanee placed nine student-athletes on All-Conference teams.
ASH 800: Junior Ash Midyett enters the 2019 schedule looking to earn a third straight All-Conference selection in the 800 meters. In his freshman year, he won the event with a 1:55.52 mark. Last season, he improved his personal best by .08 seconds but finished as All-SAA Second Team selection with a runner-up finish.
SENIOR STUBER: Meredith Stuber recorded five personal-best marks in outdoor competition last season for Sewanee, and she was a part of two school records. At the 2018 SAA Championships on campus, the Stuttgart, Germany native set the school record in the 200 meters, shattering the previous record set in 2012.
In the 4x400 relay, she, along with Kelsie Schiavone, Elizabeth Shackelford and Tricia Murphy (C'18) erased a 21-year record with a 4:11.23 time, which was good for an Honorable Mention nod by the SAA.
COMPETING IN TWO SPORTS: In total, six track and field student-athletes also compete on the football team: Kalon Johnson, J.P. Johnston, Letherio Jones, Jake Maranzana, Justin Pignocco and Zachary Swafford. Clay McKnight spends her time in the fall with the women's soccer program.
10 cross country athletes will spend time running distance events with the track and field team: Bram Atkins, Jack Barganier, Reid Calhoun, Hannah Faulkner, Perry Gresham, Ellie Herron, Adriana Hibarra, Ash Midyett, Rob Mohr and Rob Ritchie.
#Sewanee2022: The track and field program welcomes 11 freshmen to the program: Joshua Bryant, Reid Calhoun, Xiaodi Chen, Meme Everette, Perry Gresham, Anna Hubbard, J.P. Johnston, Reagen Leverett, Jake Maranzana, Gabbie Nesbit and Zachary Swafford.
MEET TO WATCH: The Tigers will travel to the Emory Classic on March 29-30. At the meet last season, Meredith Stuber cleared a personal-best 1.45 meters in the high jump and cleared 4.87 meters in the long jump. Division III teams competing in the meet last season include Emory, Piedmont (Ga.), Oglethorpe, Berry and Methodist (N.C.).
