Sewanee Track Competes at DI TSU, Cooney Wins Vault


NASHVILLE – Sewanee’s men’s and women’s track and field teams competed Saturday at the 7th Annual Boston-Moon Classic at the Ed Temple Track on the campus of TSU in Nashville against mostly Division I teams. Senior captain Tyler Cooney (Mt. Dora, Fla., Mt. Dora Bible) highlighted the Tiger effort with a first place finish in the pole vault, clearing 13-06 and topping competitors from Morehouse, Bellarrmine and Western Kentucky.

The Sewanee men were also fifth in the 4x100 relay.Senior captain Allan Long (Signal Mountain, Tenn., McCallie) was third in the 110 hurdles with a mark of 15.04. John Ugorji (Washington, D.C., Friendship Collegiate) was eighth in the 400 meter dash with a time of 51.11. Chalankis Brown (Millbrook, Ala., Stanhope Elmore) finished at ninth in the 100 meter dash with an 11.31 and Jeremy Character (Marietta, Ga., Wheeler) was sixth in the discus with a hurl of 118-08. He was also 11th in the shot with a 39-03.75.

For the women, Leisha Meade (Sevierville, Tenn., Pigeon Forge) was ninth in the discus with a toss of 91-10 and 11th in the shot put with a throw of 32-11.75. She was also ninth in the hammer throw with a toss of 95-06.

The Tigers will compete at Western Carolina next weekend before hosting the SCAC Championships April 24 and 25 on the Mountain.
