2019 SEASON PREVIEW: Men’s Tennis

SEWANEE, Tenn. - The Sewanee men's tennis team, ranked 23rd in the Oracle/ITA Preseason Poll, begins its quest for a seventh straight Southern Athletic Association Championship this weekend with split-squad action.

FAMILIAR FACE, SAME GOAL: In August, the Tigers appointed John Shackelford to the Director of Tennis for both genders. Assistant Coach Felix Mann, who enters his fourth season with the program, was elevated to head men's coach.

GRAY SKIES AT NO. 1: Jack Gray, the reigning SAA Player of the Year, posted a 12-7 singles record en route to an appearance in the NCAA Singles Championship. The Atlantic South Player to Watch by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), enters his senior season with a 39-22 singles mark and a 61-23 doubles record.

DOUBLE TROUBLE: Jordan Brewer and Andres Carro finished 13th in the region last season in doubles, posted a 12-7 record. Brewer is 31-14 in doubles play, while Carro carries a 30-15 mark in doubles into 2019.

FALL MOMENTUM INTO THE SPRING: Mike Tefel won four contests at the ITA Regional Championships, earning a spot in the finals of the flight.

#Sewanee2022: The men's tennis program welcomes four newcomers to the program: Thomas Harrison, Brandon Kali, Meade Olson and Ryan Wax.

MATCH TO WATCH: Sewanee will play at least nine teams ranked in the top-40 of the ITA poll. However, when the team heads to California to begin its annual spring break trip, they will participate in the Stag Hen Invitational, hosted by Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (Calif.) and Pomona-Pitzer (Calif.) Colleges on March 15-16.

Along with Sewanee, No. 6 CMS and No. 12 Pomona-Pitzer, the teams participating include No. 2 Bowdoin (Maine), No. 8 Gustavus Adolphus (Minn.), No. 19 Swarthmore (Pa.), No. 28 Skidmore (N.Y.) and No. 38 Southwestern (Texas).

The Tigers will open the tournament with the Gusties of GAC in the opening round.
