CLAREMONT, Calif. - Sewanee junior Jack Gray suffered a defeat to No. 12 Erik Kerrigan of the University of Chicago, 7-6 (2), 6-2, in the first round of the 2018 NCAA Men's Tennis Individuals Championships, hosted by Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges.
In the opening set, Gray (12-7) opened the contest with a 4-2 lead, but Kerrigan (18-9) rallied to win the next three points to secure the lead, 5-4.
Gray bounced back to retake the lead, 6-5, but the Chattanooga, Tenn. native was forced into a tiebreak with his opponent. In the tiebreak, Kerrigan downed Gray, 6-2, to take the opening set.
In the second set, Kerrigan, after splitting the first two games, took the clinching set by winning five of the final six games.
Appearing in his first NCAA Individual Championships, Gray will enter his senior season with a career with a 38-21 singles record and a 60-22 doubles record.
