TEMPE, Ariz. - Junior tennis player Jack Gray was selected as the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Atlantic-South's Player to Watch, the ITA has announced on Thursday.
The Chattanooga, Tenn. native recorded a 12-6 record in singles play and is 15-11 in doubles matches during the 2018 season.
Of his 12 singles wins, four came against ranked opponents, winning matches against No. 49 Matt Miles of Mary Washington (Va.) on Feb. 24 (6-0, 7-5), No. 19 Brady Anderson of Coe (Iowa) on Feb. 25 (6-1, 1-6, 7-5), No. 29 Mark Fallati of Swarthmore (Pa.) on March 16 (6-4, 6-4) and No. 34 Rohan Gupte of Tufts (Mass.) on March 18 (6-4, 7-5).
Entering the season unranked in the national and regional rankings, The Baylor School product skyrocketed to a No. 3 ranking in the Atlantic South in singles.
In doubles play, the Southern Athletic Association Player of the Year posted a 15-11 record in doubles action, playing with five different teammates.
With partner Alejandro Becker, the duo went 10-5, winning two contests against ranked foes. One of those two wins for the team came against No. 3 Robert Carter/Zach Hewlin of Whitman, downing the opponents in a thrilling 9-7 victory as the Tigers edged the Blues, 5-4, out in Pepperdine, Calif.
Gray's postseason continues next week, as he travels to Claremont, Calif. for the 2018 NCAA Men's Tennis Singles Championships, hosted by Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges, on May 24-26. Seedings will be announced on Wednesday, May 23.
