SEWANEE, Tenn. (April 1, 2017) – The No. 18 ranked Sewanee men's tennis team won its fifth straight contest after an 8-1 victory against Southern Athletic Association (SAA) rival Oglethorpe, Saturday.
The Tigers are now 13-2 overall. Additionally, Sewanee won 9-0 Friday afternoon at Covenant.
"We are happy to be off to a good start. The SAA is a very competitive environment this year and we know we have a couple of tough weeks ahead," said head coach John Shackelford. "Today's number one doubles match showed great resilience by our team and important leadership from Jack Gray. Our seniors performed very well today in singles and doubles."
At No. 2 doubles, Andres Carro and Jordan Brewer defeated Bowie and Magee, 8-0. At No. 3, Avery Schober and Scott Gallimore defeated Santaloci and Raymond, 8-1. In a close match at No. 1, Jack Gray and Alejandro Becker outlasted Richardson and Johnson, 9-8.
In singles action, Sewanee closed out the contest with five wins. At No. 3, Brewer defeated Johnson with a pair of 6-1 set wins. The Tigers then officially won the match when Gallimore rolled past Magee at No. 6, 6-2, 6-1.
At No. 1, Schober joined Brewer with 6-1 set wins. Schober defeated Richardson while Gray earned a 6-3, 6-3 victory at No. 2 against Bowie.
Sewanee returns to action with a key match against Berry, Sunday.
