No. 28 Tigers top rival No. 38 Washington & Lee for the third straight season

LEXINGTON, Va. (March 5, 2017) – For the third straight season, the No. 28 ranked Sewanee men's tennis team defeated rival No. 38 ranked Washington & Lee. On Sunday, the Tigers earned a 5-4 win at W&L.

Sewanee is now 8-1 on the season with ranked wins over Swarthmore and W&L. The Tigers' lone loss came in a long, close 5-4 match at No. 21 Mary Washington.

The Tigers opened by winning two out of three doubles matches. At No. 1, Jack Gray and Fletcher Kerr hammered Bannister and Kittredge, 8-1. Avery Schober and Andres Carro earned the other victory, at 8-4, after Aubrey Davis and Jordan Brewer lost at No. 3.

In singles, Sewanee took control early when Gray continued to roll with a 6-1, 6-4 straight set win at No. 4 over Mitchell Thomas. After W&L won at No. 2, Sewanee pushed its lead to 4-2 when Schober topped Jordan Krasner at No. 1 with a pair of 6-4 set wins.

W&L pulled back to within one after Mac Zheng defeated Davis at No. 5, 6-4, 6-1. However, after losing the first set 5-7, Davis Owen again rallied when the Tigers needed a win. Owen answered back by winning the second set against Zack Ely at No. 3, 6-4. He then closed the match out after two match points with a 6-3 win in set three.

After four straight victories, Sewanee will look to extend its winning streak with a match at Redlands on March 18th. That contest is the start to the Tigers' spring break trip in California.
