No. 37 Tigers sweep No. 22 Stevens and LaGrange

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. (Feb. 26, 2017) – After long matches on Saturday, including a six-hour thriller against nationally ranked Mary Washington, the No. 37 ranked Sewanee men's tennis team earned two perfect 9-0 wins against No. 22 Stevens and LaGrange, Sunday.

The Tigers are now 6-1 overall after winning four out of five matches this weekend.

No. 37 Sewanee 9 --- No. 22 Stevens 0

Sewanee opened its victories in doubles as Jack Gray and Fletcher Kerr defeated Kyle Henry and Kyle Cenderelli at No. 1, 8-4. Andres Carro and Avery Schober then topped Danny Polk and Michael Feldman by the same 8-4 score at No. 2.

The Tigers completed the sweep in doubles when Aubrey Davis and Jordan Brewer outlasted Stevens's No. 3 team, 9-8 (6).

In singles, Sewanee did not slow down. Gray continued his great weekend with a 6-2, 6-1 win against Dave Schulz. Carro then clinched the match with a 6-4, 6-0 win against Henry at No. 2.

Sewanee then had straight sets wins by Schober at No. 1 (6-1, 6-3) and Brewer at No. 6 (6-3, 6-4).

Both Owen and Davis eventually closed out their matches at No. 3 and No. 5 by scores of 3-6, 6-2, 10-5 and 2-6, 6-1, 10-6, respectively.

Sewanee capped off its outstanding weekend with a 9-0 home win against LaGrange.

Alejandro Becker and Hamza Khan defeated Carley and Thompson in No. 1 doubles, 8-4. Mac McCullough and Hayden Loeb rolled past Shealy and Benton at No. 2 doubles 8-3 while Trevor White and Scottie Abeel topped Cantrell and Alu at No. 3 doubles 8-1.

In singles action, Loeb won at No. 1, 6-4, 7-6 while Becker topped Thompson at No. 2, 6-3, 6-4.

At No. 3, Khan had little trouble putting away Shealy in straight sets 6-1, 6-2 while Sean Halloran crushed Benton at No. 4, 6-0, 6-2.

In the final two matches, McCullough won at No. 5, 6-1, 6-1 while Michael Tefel earned 6-1, 6-3 victory at No. 6.
