No. 13 Whitman earns NCAA Tournament win over Sewanee

ST. LOUIS, Mo. (May 10, 2014) – The Sewanee men's tennis team dropped a 5-0 NCAA Tournament match against No. 13 Whitman, Saturday, on the campus of Washington University in St. Louis.

With the loss, Sewanee ended its outstanding season. The Tigers finished with a 15-7 overall record, which included a perfect 10-0 record in conference play. Sewanee also won the SAA Regular Season and Tournament Championships for the second straight season.

Whitman opened with 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles as Steven Roston and James Rivers topped Rand Jackson and Sean Laughlin.

At No. 2 and No. 3 Sewanee kept the scores close early. Battling back and forth Alex Cooper and Eric Roddy eventually dropped their match against Andrew La Cava and Colton Malesovas 8-5. Andy Riggs and Jake Hoeger outlasted Avery Schober and Connor Winkler 8-4. 

In singles action Sewanee opened with first set victories by Schober and No. 1 and Roddy at No. 3. However, Petar Jivkov defeated Cooper at No. 5 by a score of 6-1, 6-2 while Rivers won against Laughlin at No. 6 with a pair of 6-2 set victories.

Whitman will now take host and number two-ranked Washington on Sunday.
