Tigers hammer Piedmont, 8-1

SEWANEE, Tenn. (Feb. 15, 2014) – The Sewanee men's tennis team defeated Piedmont 8-1 on Saturday afternoon.

The Tigers started the day off strong by sweeping all three doubles points and never looked back. The Tigers (1-0) went on to win five of their six singles matches to close out the contest.

The day started with a trio of doubles matches, in which Sewanee secured all three points. Sophomore Connor Winkler teamed with freshman Avery Schober to capture the first point at No. 1 doubles, 8-3.  Eric Roddy and Rand Jackson were the victors at No. 2 doubles 8-4, while Sean Laughlin and Blake Wilde completed the sweep at No. 3 doubles with an 8-1 score.

Five Tigers earned singles wins to seal the Sewanee victory. Schober, Winkler, Scott Gallimore, David Human and Wilde each picked up wins at No. 1, 2, 4, 5, and 6, respectively. In fact, Saturday marked the first-career win for freshmen Schober, Gallimore and Wilde.

The Tigers will be back in action as they host No. 5 Kenyon at the Bruton-Guerry Tennis Center on March 1. That match is scheduled to begin at 12:00 p.m.
