SEWANEE, Tenn. (Sept. 20, 2013) – The Sewanee men's tennis team opened the 2013 USTA/ITA Regionals strong, Friday.
Below are some highlights for the Tigers during day one. Attached above is a link to Friday's results.
Main Draw Singles
Avery Schober defeated Charlie Rees of Millsaps in straight sets 6-0, 6-1. In the second round, Schober stayed alive by routing Peter Hvid of North Carolina Wesleyan 6-2, 6-2. On Saturday, Schober is schedule to take on Ian Wagner of Emory who is seeded third in the bracket.
Seventh seeded Rand Jackson advanced to Saturday's third round with two convincing victories. Jackson first topped Aaron Smedley of Guilford in straight sets 6-1, 6-3. Jackson then moved to the third round after Nathan Stein of Centre retired. With his two victories, Jackson is scheduled to take on Emory's Rocco English.
The third Tiger to advance in the Main Draw Singles bracket was Eric Roddy. Roddy rolled past Graham Sowden in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2. Then in the afternoon, Roddy outlasted Eric Brinzensky in a long 6-2, 5-7, 3-2 match. Roddy will now face second-seeded Eric Halpern of Emory.
South Draw Singles
Nelson Jetmundsen won his match over Marcello Maziero of Mississippi. Jetmundsen will now take on Dan Miller of Centre.
Trapp Tubbs continued his run after first rolled over Eric Busch of Huntingdon in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2. A match later, Tubbs dominated his contest against Hilton Bilbrey by a 6-0, 6-1 score.
Charles Williamson was the third Tiger to advance to the third round after he won his opening two matches. Williamson had little trouble against Connor Shimmel of Covenant (6-1, 6-0) and then roll past Mark Wasileski of Guilford by a 6-2, 6-1 score. Williamson and Tubbs will now play each other Saturday to see which Tiger will advance to the semifinals.
Finally, Robert Corey was the final Sewanee student-athlete to advance to the quarterfinals after he defeated Seth McClendon of Huntingdon, 6-1, 6-3. Corey will play Ryan Runager of Huntingdon on Saturday.
Main Draw Doubles
Winkler and Shober advanced to the quarterfinals with a pair of victories Friday. The Tiger duo opened with a 8-4 win over Sowden/Brilliant of Rhodes and then defeated Bucholz and Miller of Methodist by a close score of 9-8 (8-6).
