Tigers defeat rival Rhodes for SAA Championship

SEWANEE, Tenn. (April 28, 2013) – The Sewanee men's tennis team became the first of four Sewanee athletic programs to win Southern Athletic Association (SAA) Championships Sunday, as the Tigers defeated long-time rival Rhodes, 5-1, inside the Fowler Center.

Sewanee opened with a win at No. 3 doubles when senior Grant Hopkins teamed up with freshman Eric Roddy to win by a score of 8-1.

After a long match, Rhodes earned its first and only point when Colin Perry and Elliot Blatt topped Connor Winkler and Levi Joy.

However, the success for the Lynx was short lived after Rand Jackson and Sean Laughlin outlasted Sanders Phelps and Rob Steinwedell, 8-6.

As singles play got underway, Sewanee kept playing well.

Roddy opened the wins at No. 4 when he dominated his opponent in straight sets. Moments later, Winkler then gave the Tigers a 4-1 lead when he topped Perry by a 6-0, 6-1 score.

Needing only one point to secure the title, all eyes turned to Jackson. After taking the first set 6-3, the sophomore then prevailed in the second by a score of 6-2.

With its season now over, Sewanee ended 2013 with a strong 14-6 overall record and an undefeated mark in SAA action.
