BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (Feb. 11, 2017) – Led by another win from Meghan Mulhern, the Sewanee swimming and diving teams wrapped up the Southern Athletic Association (SAA) Championships, Saturday, at the Birmingham CrossPlex.
Mulhern won the women's 1650 Free for the second straight season. Her time of 17:42.22 was ahead of Carly Good of Rhodes. Mulhern is now a three-time SAA champion after back-to-back wins in the 1650 and by winning the 2017 500 Free.
Noel Whitlock continued her great week in Birmingham with another second-place finish, this time on the 3-meter board. Whitlock finished with 368.15 points behind winner Sarah Hayhurst of Centre. Teammate Jessica Zahn finished fifth in the same event with 223.10 points.
Additionally, senior Caty Hueske added to her all-conference accolades with a second-place finish in the women's 200 Backstroke. Hueske's time of 2:09.20 was only behind winner Allie Hill of Rhodes who won with a 2:01.89 mark. Both Hueske and Hill were the only two swimmers to go sub-2:10:00.
Sophomore Kaylee Pierson then finished third in the women's 200 Breaststroke with a time of 2:29.12. Michael Whitehead followed in the men's 200 Breaststroke with a time of 2:08.30. His fifth place finish was over three seconds faster than his prelim time on Saturday morning.
Finally, freshman Mary McCarthy earned her way into the 200 Butterfly final. McCarthy finished seventh in 2:15.56.
Overall, the Tigers finished fifth in the women's competition with 475.5 points. On the men's side, the Tigers closed out the championships also in fifth place with 350 points. BSC swept both titles while Rhodes finished second on the women's side and Centre took second in the men's standings.
