Men’s Soccer Announces Nine Additions to 2019 Squad

SEWANEE, Tenn. - Announced on Tuesday by head coach Tony Pacella, the Sewanee men's soccer program will welcome nine incoming freshmen to the 2019 roster.

"The incoming 2023 class is arguably the deepest and most talented group since my arrival at Sewanee. Players from some of the top club and high school programs in the country are comprised in this group," quoted Pacella. "I have to give a lot of credit to Assistant Coach Patrick Bain. He has worked tirelessly recruiting these young men and his hard work has definitely paid off. I can not wait to get the team back on campus in August."

Mencken Camp
Hometown: Spartanburg, S.C.
Height: 5-8
Weight: 140lbs
Position: Center Midfielder

High School: Spartanburg High School

Athletic Accomplishments: Four-Year Varsity Player, Three-Time All-Region, 2017 Regional Champions, Selected for The North-South All-Star Game, Alternate for Clash of Carolinas All-Star Match, Two-Time SHS MVP, Senior Year Captain, Led the Team in Goals both Junior and Senior Year, Three-Time District ODP, Last Year Region ODP.

Academic Accomplishments: National Honor Society

Personal Statement: "I am super excited to be a part of the Sewanee soccer team. Sewanee provides not only is a great soccer environment, but it is also a great academic institution as well."

 

Bryan Franklin
Hometown: Griffin, Ga.
Height: 5-10
Weight: 175lbs
Position: Forward
High School: Spalding High School
Club Team Name: AFC Lightning 01 Gold

Athletic Achievements: Four years of Varsity, Three-year Team Captain, Three-Time First Team All-Region, Two Time First Team All-Conference. 2016 All-State Selection. 2016, 2017 Georgia ODP Team, 2017 Region 3 Team. 2017 and 2018 Georgia State Cup Final Four with AFC Lightning.

Academic Achievements: National Honor Society, Beta Club

Personal Statement: "I am excited to be attending and playing soccer at Sewanee for the next four years. The beautiful campus and incredible staff made it an easy choice for me and my family. Being able to meet most of the players and the coaches made me realize Sewanee has not only a team but a family. I can not wait to be a part of it."

 

JP Furman
Hometown: Mandeville, La.
Height: 6-0
Weight: 185lbs
Position: Goalkeeper

Athletic Accomplishments: Four-Time State Champion with Mandeville, First Team All-State, First Team All-Metro, Two-time First Team All-District, Two Year Captain, Two Time LHS Player of The Year 2018 State Runner Up with Lakeshore, 2001 ODP Region III Team.

Academic Accomplishments: National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta

Personal statement: "I am extremely excited to continue my academics and soccer career at Sewanee the next four years. I cannot wait to begin my time on the domain both on and off the field!"

 

Matthew Hunter
Hometown: Sante Fe, N.M.
Height: 6-0
Weight: 165lbs
Position: Forward

High School: Sante Fe High School

Athletic Accomplishments: Lead the state of New Mexico in 5A Class with 29 goals in his senior year, District Player of the Year, All-State Team, 76 goals and 31 career assists, Four-time All-District selection, Three-time Sante Fe player of the year, four-year club captain with Rio Rapids Northern SC.

Academic Accomplishments: AP Scholar with Distinction.

Personal Statement: "Sewanee is the perfect fit for me. It offers a strong liberal arts education in a beautiful location. The coaches were very open and helpful, and I am looking forward to many great seasons as a Tiger."

 

Christian Kirk
Hometown: Knoxville, Tenn.
Height: 5-9

Athletic Achievements: Four-year Varsity Starter, Senior Captain, Two-Time First Team All-District, Two-time First Team All KIL, 2018 First Team All-Region, 2018 District MVP, Two-Time KCHS Attacking Player of the Year, Nominated for Knoxville News Sentinel Player of the Year 2018, and 2015 State Champions with FC Alliance.

Academic Honors: National Honor Society, 2017 KCHS Physics Award, Presidents List as a Senior and Honor Roll first three years of high school.

Personal Statement: "The first time I met Coach Pacella and Coach Bain I felt an immediate connection. I could see their dedication to the sport and to the team, and I knew right away that I wanted to be a part of that. The second I stepped foot on Sewanee's campus, my decision was finalized. Athletic Accomplishments: TFCA US Development Academy Team Captain, Lead team in games started and minutes played for the last five years, NCFC U19 ECNL, United Coaches All-Mid Atlantic Team, Two-Time 4A All-State Team, NC All-Region Team, Two-Time All-Conference Team, Two-Time Finalist for High School OT Soccer Player of the Year, 2017 Team MVP, 2018 Green Hope HS Fall Sports MVP (All sports), 2018 Team Captain, Powerade State Cup Champions (2017), Selected for NC East/West All-Star Game and Clash of Carolinas All-Star Game. Personal Statement: "I chose Sewanee because it checked all of my boxes. Not only that, but I also see Sewanee as a school that's going to allow me to be challenged both on the soccer field but also in the classroom. However, the reason I'm most excited for this fall is the relationships and bonds I saw when I visited, both with the team, the coaching staff and throughout the campus. I can't wait to be a part of this amazing community. YSR!"

 

The Tigers will kick off the 2019 campaign on the pitch Aug. 31 against Brevard (N.C.) at the Berry Invitational in Rome, Ga.
