SEWANEE, Tenn. - The Sewanee men's soccer team, led by fifth-year head coach Tony Pacella, has announced a challenging schedule for the 2018 season, including three contests against nationally ranked opponents. The Tigers will have seven contests at Puett Field.
The Tigers open the schedule with a weekend trip to Eastern Mennonite (Va.) on Aug. 31 and Bridgewater (Va.) on Sept. 1.
The home opener for Sewanee will be on Tuesday, Sept. 4, when rival Covenant (Ga.) makes the trek to the Cumberland Plateau.
The Tigers return to the road on Sept. 8 with a trip to Maryville (Tenn.), as the team seeks its first win against the Scots since 2007.
Sewanee returns home for another midweek contest with Huntingdon (Ala.) on Sept. 11.
The next four contests will occur on the road, and three of the four will be against ranked opponents. The first contest will occur on Sept. 15 with Washington & Lee (Va.), who finished 14th in the final United Soccer Coaches Association poll and were receiving votes in the D3soccer.Com poll.
After a weekend in Virginia, the Tigers return home for their third consecutive home match in as many weeks when Fisk (Tenn.) opposes Sewanee.
On Sept. 21, the Tigers will open the Southern Athletic Association (SAA) schedule with a match at Berry.
Tuesday, Sept. 25 will see the Purple and Gold match up with their second opponent nationally ranked. Sewanee will travel to No. 8/13 Emory (Ga.) in Atlanta.
SAA play resumes on Sept. 29 when Sewanee returns to Atlanta with a contest against defending SAA Tournament Champion Oglethorpe, ranked 24th in D3soccer.Com's final rankings in 2017.
After a road-weary first half of the schedule, the Tigers will host five of the seven contests at Puett Field. The Tigers begin the month of October with a contest against MUW on Oct. 2.
After a weekend trip to Hendrix and Rhodes Oct. 5 and 7, respectively, the Tigers' final four regular season contests will be at home. Sewanee will entertain Birmingham-Southern (Oct. 12), Millsaps (Oct. 14), Piedmont (Ga.) (Oct. 16) and Centre (Oct. 20) to wrap up the regular season.
The 2018 SAA Tournament will begin on Oct. 27 with the quarterfinals hosted by the top-four seeds. The semifinals and championship will take place on Nov. 2 and 4, respectively, at the highest remaining seed.
The Tigers finished the 2017 schedule with an 8-8 record and a three-seed in the SAA Tourney.
