2017 SEASON PREVIEW: Men's Soccer

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Head coach Tony Pacella and the men's soccer team gears up for the 2017 season this weekend at Birmingham-Southern for its Labor Day Classic.

The Tigers will take on Guilford (N.C.) on Friday night at 5 p.m. and Randolph (Va.) on Saturday afternoon at 2:30 p.m.

Sewanee finished 7-10-2 a year ago, and the Purple and Gold return to the Labor Day Classic at BSC for a second straight year, winning both of their matches in 2016.

Ben Vaeth and Kyle Johnston enter 2017 as the leading scorers from last season. Vaeth, a Richmond, Va. native, scored four goals and tallied two assists for 10 points, while Johnston, a Sewanee native, recorded four goals and led the team with six assists for 12 points. The duo each recorded a game-winning goal.

In goal, Will Merriman saved 75 shots in 2016, and the Memphis, Tenn. native, averaged 1.65 goals against per game.

Ben Shankle saw limited time in goal last season. Logging 30 minutes in goal, the Nashville, Tenn. native did not allow a goal and recorded one save.

The Tigers will have nine newcomers to the program in 2017, Fernando Carballo, Hagen Clements, Brendan Mann, James Murray, William Porter, Evan Stuber, Andile Tshuma, Andrew Turk and Severin Velasco.

The Purple and Gold begins the season with the first five matches on the road. The home opener is slated for Wednesday, Sept. 13 against Emory for a 5 p.m. start.
