Pacella announces the Class of 2021

Sewanee, Tenn. (June 20, 2017) - Coming off an improved 2016 season, Sewanee Men's Soccer Head Coach Tony Pacella announced the Class of 2021.

"I am very excited to introduce this group," said Pacella. "My staff and I were able to identify and select a very talented group of soccer players but also a great group of young men."

Andile Tshuma 

Hometown: Bulawayo, Zimbabwe

High School: Episcopal High School, Alexandria, Va.

Height: 6'1"

Weight: 190 lbs

Position: Forward

Club Team: Annandale United 97

Athletic Accolades: All-Conference (IAC) as a junior, team captain senior year, Copa Coca-Cola International Tournament Champion (2013) with Zimbabwe U17 National team.

Hagen Clements

Hometown: Fayetteville, Ga.

High School: Whitewater High School

Height: 6'0"

Weight: 180 lbs

Position: Center Back/Center Midfield

Club Team: Concorde Fire 99 Elite

Athletic Accolades: Three-time First-Team All-Region player in high school, four-year club captain, national team rank No. 9, two-time state cup champion with Concorde Fire, two-time student-athlete of the week at Whitewater High School. 

Academic accolades: British Literature Award, two-time Student-Athlete of the Week at Whitewater High School, National Spanish Exam Honorable Mention, National Spanish Honor Society member.

Personal Statement: "I am very proud to be playing at Sewanee next year. Coach Pacella was the first coaches to approach me in the recruiting process a year and a half ago and his efforts, along with the close-knit team, gave me confidence that Sewanee was the right choice. I am extremely excited to join the program and continue my studies on the beautiful campus of Sewanee."

Severin "Seve" Velasco

Hometown: Richmond, Va.

In 2016, as a junior, Seve was voted captain and MVP, where he scored 11 goals and had 10 assists. That same year he was awarded First-Team All-Conference honors. He was also a First-Team All-Metro player, First-Team All-Region player, and First-Team All-State selection. In 2017, as a senior, Seve was voted team captain and MVP, scored 13 goals and had 14 assists. He was voted First-Team All-Conference, First-Team All-Metro, First-All-Districttrict, First-Team All-Region, and First-Team All State. 

Academic Accolades: National Honors Society, National Spanish Honors Society.

Personal statement: "I am incredibly excited to become part of the Sewanee family. My interest in the school grew drastically after talking with the coach and again after coming down for a visit to see the campus and meet the players. Coach Pacella along with players, students, and faculty were eager to answer all my questions. Ultimately, this made my decision very easy and left me determined to start my college experience at Sewanee. YSR! "

Andrew Turk

Brendan Mann

Hometown: Asheville, N.C.

High School: A.C Reynolds High School 

Height: 5'9"

Weight: 145 lbs

Position: Center Midfield 

Club: Highland Football Club (HFC) 99 Red 

Athletic Accolades: Four-year varsity player for AC Reynolds, three-time All-Conference Selection, three-time All-Region selection, two-time All-Western North Carolina selection, two-time All-State Selection, and senior captain. Scored the most goals on the team as a junior and season. Was voted MVP as a junior and season and nominated for male athlete of the year for Western North Carolina. His high school team won team of the year for WNC, reaching semifinals of state playoffs. Was also selected to play in East-West All-Star game, selected to play in Clash of the Carolinas All-Star game, and finally, his club team reached state finals and competed at regionals. 

Academic Honors: National Honor Society

Felipe I. Barreras Galindo

Hometown: Guaynabo, Puerto Rico 

Club: Cupeyville School

Height: 5'9"

Weight: 167 lbs

Position: Defender

Club Team: GPS Conquistadores 

Accolades: Club captain since 2012. Was named MVP of the 2015 Copa Representante. Won the Copa Legisladores and Liga de Fútbol de Puerto Rico championships in 2016. His team was the runner-up in 2015 of the Champions Copa Representante. Also an All-Star player in 2014, 2015, 2016, and 2017, MVP 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, and 2017, and was the MVP in the 2014 American Military Academy Tournament.

National Team: U20 Puerto Rico National Soccer Team, First 30 participants draft 

Academic Honors: 8th to 12th Honor Class Group, Honor Roll student, NHJS, and NHS member. Additionally was a Congress of Future Medical Leader and Cupeyville School Delegate.

James Murray

William Porter

Academic Accolades: Four-time medalist on the National German Exam.

Personal Statement: "I'm excited to be a part of the soccer program at Sewanee and am looking forward to the upcoming season. With the current and incoming players, the future looks promising for the team."

Carlos "Fernando" Carballo  

Hometown: Spring Hill, Tenn.

High School: Independence High School

Position: Outside Midfielder

Height: 5'7"

Weight: 140 lbs

Club Team: Nashville F.C.

Athletic Accolades: Fernando was a four-year varsity starter, captain his senior year and helped lead the team to the district tournament. Led his club team to the state semifinals. Has experience playing in the Region Premier League, where he was second with assists with his former club Tennessee Soccer Club (TSC). 

Academic Accolades: Honors student, a member of the Spanish Honor Society. Winner of the Backyard Outfitter Scholarship.

Personal Statement: "I am delighted that I will be attending Sewanee next fall and have the chance to play soccer as well. Coach Pacella, the Admissions counselors, and the Financial Aid Office were so helpful in this difficult recruiting process. Going on my visit and having the chance to play and meet some of the guys made it an even easier choice to know that Sewanee was the school for me. I know with the team and coaches we have at the moment, we can do great things. I cannot wait to get up to the mountains and start making an impact on and off the field. #GoTigers "

Michael "Evan" Stuber

Hometown: Böblingen, Germany

High School: Stuttgart High School

Heigh: 6'3"

Weight: 185 lbs

Position: Goalkeeper

Club team: TSG Tübingen

Athletic Accolades: Verbandsstaffel Süd, Baden Württemberg. All-Europe 2015-16. Outside of soccer, was a second team player in tennis where he was fourth in the men's doubles title at the DODEA European Tennis Championships in 2015.

Academic Accolades: AVID Departmental Medal for Academic Excellence 12. Principal's Honor Roll (4.0 and higher) as a senior. DODEA Athletic Academic Achievement Award for two years and was an Honor Roll student the first three years of high school.

Personal Statement: "I am both honored and excited to have the opportunity to play collegiate soccer at the University of the South. My decision to play for Sewanee was finalized when I discovered the focus of the men's' soccer program. It is very similar to that of my German club team. Nothing can compare to the brotherhood found on the pitch playing with a motivated team focused on success and integrity."
