Men’s Lacrosse Falters Late to Rhodes

SEWANEE, Tenn. - The Sewanee men's lacrosse team saw an 8-3 halftime lead erased, as the visiting Rhodes Lynx rallied to an 11-10 win over the Tigers on a cold, rainy Friday night at historic Hardee-McGee Field at Harris Stadium.

-The Tigers got out to a hot start, netting the first goals of the contest, as they outscored the Lynx, 5-1, after 15 minutes of play.

-With nine minutes left in the opening half, Rhodes cut the deficit to 5-2 on a Steven Yowan goal, but six seconds later, after a faceoff win by Ryan Stubits, he saw Jake Vaughn open for the goal.

-Sewanee pushed the lead to 8-3 with five minutes to go, and the lead would hold at intermission.

-The third quarter saw the sticks flying for the Lynx, scoring the first four goals of the period, including the first three goals scored in a 1:12 span.

-Sewanee, leading 8-7 after the four-goal start by Rhodes, pushed the lead up to 9-7 on a Will Pratt man-up goal with 9:08 left in the period.

-The Tigers put more cushion to their lead, adding their 10th goal of the contest at the 8:21 mark by Tristan Robinson.

-However, that would be the last goal the Tigers would score, as the Lynx held the home team scoreless for the final 23:21 of the contest.

-Sewanee took a 10-9 lead into the fourth quarter, but the Lynx evened the score at 10 with 9:36 to go in regulation before taking the lead a minute later.

-With 2:47 left in the contest, Sewanee missed their chance to even the score on a saved shot. Rhodes took a shot with 1:29 to go and it was deflected off of Tal Wharton, which gave the Tigers possession.

-After a good Sewanee clear and a timeout, with less than a minute left, Rhodes caused a turnover to secure possession.

-With 20 seconds left, the Tigers got the ball back on a Cal Pearce deflection to cause the turnover.

-Rhodes incurred a penalty with 7.3 seconds left after the caused turnover, which gave Sewanee an opportunity to score man-up, however, the Tigers missed two wide shots and the visitors secured the victory to take sole possession of first place in the Southern Athletic Association standings.

-Will Pratt tallied a hat trick on four shots for the Tigers, and Hayden Hunt scored twice to lead the scoring.

-Cal Pearce scooped up four groundballs and caused four turnovers.

-Tal Wharton (3-2) swatted away nine attempted shots in full time.

-Ethan Garland recorded three goals to lead the Lynx, while Tyler Milwit and Steven Yowan each scored twice.

-Cameron Link (7-2) saved eight shots in the win for Rhodes.

The homestand continues on Sunday with a noon faceoff against Hendrix.
