LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (April 23, 2017) – After an improvement on Saturday, the No. 18 ranked Sewanee men's golf team could not maintain its momentum as the Tigers finished sixth at the Southern Athletic Association (SAA) Championships.
No. 8 Rhodes won the team title with a three-round 890. Sewanee finished with a 915 total after the Tigers shot their second 307 of the weekend, Sunday.
Individually, No. 3 ranked Ryan Elmore of Berry and Steven LaMay of Birmingham-Southern were tied for medalist honors with a two-over par 218.
Taylor Mottern led Sewanee with a three-round 227 total. After his final-round 76, Mottern finished tied for 16th. Despite a tough opening round, freshman Tommy Oliver rallied back to finish tied for 18th in his first-ever SAA Championship. Oliver finished with a 73 on Sunday for a three-round 228.
A stroke behind Oliver was Nick Powell, who finished 24th while freshman Gray Matthews tied for 29th awith a 235 score. George Hite tied Matthews on Sunday with a final-round 80 which gave the Nashville, Tenn., native a 54-hole 241. Hite finished 36th while Alex Wedding was 37th at 244.
