Men’s Basketball Fends Off Late Rally by Johnson

SEWANEE, Tenn. - The Sewanee men's basketball team improved to 3-0 on the 2018-19 season Friday night with a 91-78 victory over Johnson in the opener of the Lon Varnell Classic.

HOW IT HAPPENED
-Johnson tied the contest at 19 points apiece at the under-eight media timeout, but it was the Tigers that sprinted out to a lead that they would not relinquish. Sewanee went on a 17-9 run to close the opening half with a 36-28 lead.

-The Tigers came out strong in the second half, outscoring the Royals 29-10 at the under-12 media timeout.

-Despite an attempted rally by the visitors, who got the contest to an 11-point deficit late in the half, the Tigers prevailed to earn a 3-0 start.

SEWANEE KEY STATISTICS
-Luke Smith led Sewanee scorers with 19 points on 5-of-10 shooting with all of his made field goals from beyond the arc.

-Hunter Buescher scored 17 and assisted on six shots, while Jordan Warlick dropped 15 points.

-Joey Knox made 6-of-8 from the field with 13 points in 19 bench minutes.

JOHNSON KEY STATISTICS
-Coby Jones led all scorers with 23 points and collected a double-double with 15 rebounds.

UP NEXT
The Lon Varnell Classic will conclude Saturday, as Sewanee will face Brevard at 3 p.m. inside Juhan Gymnasium.
