SEWANEE, Tenn. - The Sewanee men's basketball team recorded double-digit wins in conference play for the third time in the last six years, and they were one game away from hosting the SAA Tournament for the first time in program history.
The 2018 Tigers finished with a 14-11 record, with a 10-4 mark in Southern Athletic Association play.
In their second game of the season vs. Washington & Lee, head coach Mick Hedgepeth captured his first win as a head coach with a 96-79 victory over the Generals.
The Tigers collected their first SAA Player and Defensive Player of the Year in 2018. Adrian Thomas was selected as the SAA Player of the Year. The Chattanooga native finished as the leading rebounder in the conference with 9.6 per game, which was ranked 47th in all of Division III. Averaging 18.4 points per game in 2018, the sophomore finished second in the league, while leading the lead in field goal shooting with a 57.1 percent mark from the field.
Cam Caldwell was chosen as the SAA Defensive Player of the Year. The Charlotte, N.C. native has been an asset to the Tigers, whether taking shots on the wing or guarding in the post. He has contributed to Sewanee's league-leading marks in opposing field goal percentage (40.5) and opposing points per game (68.3), as well as the Tigers' nation-best mark in three-point shooting defense (27.5).
Luke Smith became the second Sewanee student-athlete to collect Newcomer of the Year Honors, joining Cody Jones from the 2016 season. The Knoxville native finished the regular season leading all SAA freshmen in scoring (15.5), assists (4.3) and assist-to-turnover ratio (1.9). He averages 34 minutes per contest, second-best in the league.
Memorable Game | Sewanee vs. Rhodes, Jan. 26
In a packed house inside Juhan Gymnasium, there is one shot that nobody will not soon forget. Freshman Sean McDonough, with 2.2 seconds left and each team with 96 points apiece, drained a game-winning three-pointer from the left wing to give the Tigers the 99-96 win.
The high-power offense of Rhodes, who finished the season third in the nation in scoring (106.5), was one of just seven games where the Lynx did not eclipse the century mark in a contest.
