SEWANEE, Tenn. - The Sewanee men's basketball team is gearing up for the 2017-18 season with a nine-day, two city trip, beginning on Wednesday, to Italy and Germany.
The program will spend four days each in Venice, Italy and Munich, Germany. The Tigers will face two different teams in each city, playing a total of four games, with off days in between each game.
"It's a valuable experience coming in as the new head coach, since I was the assistant coach last season," said first-year head coach Mick Hedgepeth. "Having my assistant coach, Brian Emerson with me, this is like a dress rehearsal for our staff and our players. Since we do not officially start practice until October 15, it allows us to save the time in the preseason and learn from our mistakes from last year."
Hedgepeth has one key goal in mind for this trip with his team, getting the cultural experience that these two countries have to offer.
"The main goal for this trip is non-basketball. This trip is to give our student-athletes the opportunity to see and experience different cultures. We have some on our team who have not been outside the United States, and we have one who has never flown before. This will be a special trip for all involved."
The team, who reported on Friday, will get practices in until they depart Wednesday morning, but once they are across the pond, they will just play basketball and enjoy developing team chemistry.
