SEWANEE, Tenn. - Head coach Laura McIntyre and the Sewanee field hockey team prepare for the 2017 opener with a weekend trip to Eastern Mennonite and Roanoke.
The Tigers will open the 2017 season playing their first four matches away from The Pit, beginning with the Royals on Saturday at noon ET / 11 a.m. CT, while the matchup with the Maroons will occur Sunday morning at 11 a.m. / 10 a.m. CT.
In her first season, McIntyre finished with a 6-9 record, including a semifinal appearance in the Southern Athletic Association (SAA) Tournament in 2016.
The Tigers' leading strikers, Virginia Barry and Ceara Caffrey, return for their senior and sophomore years, respectively. Caffrey led the team in 2017 with 10 goals on 40 shots (.250 average). Assisting on two shots, the Scituate, Mass. native finished a team-best 22 points.
Barry tallied nine goals in 13 games last season for the Purple and Gold on 30 shots for a .300 average. The Greensboro, N.C. native finished with 18 points.
In goal, Katya Waters logged almost 728 minutes for the Tigers in 2016, averaging 2.69 goals against per match. The Glen Ridge, N.J. native has saved 77 shots, and has stopped 152 opponent attacks in almost 2,075 minutes.
Following the four game road swing and a bye week in the third week of the season, the Purple and Gold open with Lindenwood out of Belleville, Ill. on Friday, Sept. 22 for a 6 p.m. kickoff.
