ATLANTA (Nov. 8, 2016) – Led by Southern Athletic Association (SAA) Newcomer of the Year Jo Jo Young, the Sewanee field hockey team earned four all-conference awards the league announced Tuesday.
Along with being the SAA Newcomer of the Year, Young was named to the All-SAA Second-Team. She was joined by 2015 SAA Newcomer of the Year and All-SAA Second-Team selection Nikki Ereli. Junior Katie Wilson was named to the All-SAA First-Team while senior Carrie Anderson was named to the All-SAA Second-Team.
Playing as a defender, Young started and played in all 15 matches for the Tigers. The first-year student-athlete finished with one assist and nine shots. More importantly, Young led the Sewanee defensive midfield by commanding the pace of play for the Tigers.
Along with Ereli, who started every match, the Tiger defense gave up only 1.73 goals per contest. Ereli also led the league in player defensive saves with five stops as a defender.
Wilson earned her award after being a great two-way player. The midfielder/forward finished ranked in the top-20 among all conference players in shots and defensive saves. Additionally, Wilson scored one goal and had one assist.
Finally, Anderson closed out her senior season with a league-high nine assists. Despite not scoring a single goal, Anderson still ranked 28th in points while finishing fourth among all conference players in shots.
