Tigers fall to Rhodes on Homecoming

SEWANEE, Tenn. (Oct. 27, 2012) – Despite a late fourth-quarter rally, the Sewanee football team fell just short against long-time rival Rhodes 14-10, Saturday, at Harris Stadium.

After a Sewanee turnover, Rhodes struck first when Kevin Vieira capped off a six-play, 74-yard drive with a three-yard touchdown run.

After both teams struggled over the next two quarters, Sewanee finally got on the board when freshman quarterback Cody Daniel scored from five-yards out.

With the score tied 7-7, Sewanee quickly got the ball back when Quentin Jones forced a fumble with 10:05 left.

On the ensuing drive, senior kicker Trey Knighton nailed a career-long 44-yard field goal to give the Tigers their first lead with 7:57 to play.

After Rhodes and Sewanee failed to score on the next two drives, the Lynx went back to work with 3:14 to play.

Nine-plays later, Rhodes took back the lead when quarterback Tyler Perkins found receiver Jack Lartigue in the back of the end zone with 29 seconds remaining.

Despite having no timeouts and a limited amount of time, Sewanee quickly marched down the field. After back-to-back completions to Stephen Jackson, Daniel hit Devante Jones for a 23-yard gain to the Rhodes 12-yard line.

With only six seconds left, the game seemed to be over when Daniel fumbled the ball at the Rhodes six. However, on the play, the Lynx were called for defensive holding, which gave Sewanee one last chance with no time remaining.

Unfortunately, on the final play, Daniel fell just short of the end zone when Justin Toliver stopped him at the three-yard line.

Sewanee finished with 224 total yards. Individually, Daniel led the Tigers with 125 yards of total offense and one touchdown.

Defensively, Jones led the Tigers with 12 tackles and two tackles for a loss.

The Tigers will close out their 2012 campaign with a 1:00 p.m., contest Saturday against Trinity.
